Francis Chambers was born Athol Frank Chambers, on the 19th of April 1899, at Heathcote, VIC, to George Chambers and Annie Maria Sims. Francis had two brothers, Harold and John, who are also remembered in the Avenue.

Francis had previously served in the Senior Cadets and the Citizens Forces, when, as a draper's assistant in Ballan, VIC, he enlisted in the AIF at Ballarat, VIC, on the 22nd of January 1917, at the age of 18 years and 6 months - his parents lived in Bacchus Marsh. He embarked aboard the HMAT A74 Marathon with the 8th Victorian General Service Reinforcements.

Disembarking in England at the end of September 1918 he was allotted to the 7th Battalion. Three weeks later he was in hospital with influenza. In January 1919 he embarked for Australia aboard the City of York.

Arriving back in Australia at the end of February 1919 Francis was discharged from the AIF in March. Francis Chambers died at Bendigo, VIC, in 1960, aged 62.

He is listed on the Shire of Bacchus Marsh Roll of Honour and the Ballan War Memorial.

Notes

  1. He started in the 8th Victorian General Service Reinforcements, but transferred to the 7th Battalion on arrival in England.
