Lance Corporal William Giles Chippindall

William Giles Chippindall was born at Collingwood, VIC, on the 16^th of December 1896, to Henry Chippindall and Isabella Leach.

He was a painter and gave his address as East Brunswick - it is more likely he was from Bacchus Marsh⁽³⁾ - , VIC, when he enlisted in the AIF, 4^th Light Horse Regiment, 7^th Reinforcements, on the 18^th of January 1915, aged 18. He had previously served in the Senior Cadets, 29^th Light Horse. William embarked aboard the RMS Persia in August.

At the end of October 1915 William joined his unit at Gallipoli. In December he was evacuated to Egypt with the rest of the ANZAC forces. He spent the rest of the war in and around Suez, Sinai and Palestine. In May 1917 William was admitted to a Casualty Clearing Station and then a Convalescent Depot, suffering from a fever of unknown origin, rejoining his unit in July. As part of the 4^th Light Horse Regiment he participated in the charge of the 4^th Light Horse Brigade at Beersheba, in October. William was admitted to the 14^th Australian General Hospital in late May 1918, suffering from Pleurisy. After transferring to a rest camp he rejoined his unit in July. He was promoted to Lance Corporal in November 1918, before embarking for Australia aboard the Port Sydney, in March 1919. William arrived back in Australia in April and was discharged from the AIF in June.

William joined the Australian Army in 1942, service number, V500305. He rose to the rank of Sergeant in the Australian Line Survey, before he was discharged in 1945.

William Chippindall died in Mornington, VIC, in 1967, aged 70.

He is listed on the Shire of Bacchus Marsh Roll of Honour, the Bacchus Marsh & District Roll of Honour and the Bacchus Marsh Roll of Honor.
