Alexander Claney was born in the Ballarat region, VIC, in 1878, to Alexander Claney and Elizabeth Dunn. Alexander married Alice Mabel West in 1906 and had three daughters, Victoria Mabel in 1907, Ethel Elizabeth Maria in 1909 and Elsie May in 1916, all born in Bacchus Marsh, VIC.

Alexander was a labourer in Bacchus Marsh, VIC, when he enlisted in the AIF, 22nd Battalion, 14th Reinforcements, on the 8th of January 1916, at the age of 35. He embarked aboard the HMAT A32 Themistocles in July, disembarking in Plymouth, England, in September.

He joined the 22nd Battalion in France, in early December 1916, but three weeks later in the Somme region he was evacuated to hospital in Rouen, France. A shell explosion caused him to fall 10 feet into a trench, fracturing some ribs and losing the sight of his left eye (due to the explosion not the fall). At the beginning of January 1917 Alexander was transferred to hospital in England - he was discharged from hospital at the end of February.

Alexander was detached for duty with the ANZAC Provost Corps for a few weeks in May 1917 then to the Australian Army Medical Corps, for guard duty, until October. He was then detached for guard duty with Headquarters AIF Depots UK for the remainder of the war. He rejoined the 22nd Battalion and embarked for Australia aboard the Nestor in December 1918, disembarking in February. Alexander was discharged from the AIF in May.

Alexander Claney died at Dandenong, VIC, in 1945, aged 63.

He is listed on the Shire of Bacchus Marsh Roll of Honour, the Bacchus Marsh & District Roll of Honour and the Roll of Honour of St. Andrew's Presbyterian Church, Bacchus Marsh.
