William was born in 1887 in Bacchus Marsh, VIC, to George Rogers and Elizabeth Tait.

William was an engineer living in Brunswick, VIC, when he enlisted in the AIF, 7th Reinforcements, 3rd Pioneer Battalion on the 28th of May 1917, aged 29. He embarked aboard the HMAT A32 Themistocles in August, disembarking at Glasgow, Scotland in early October.

He arrived in Rouelles, France, in February 1918 and joined the 3rd Pioneers shortly afterwards. He was detached for duty with the 3rd Division Headquarters in August, rejoining his unit on the 12th of September. It was during the breaking of the Hindenburgh Line on the 29th of September 1918, near Ronssoy, France, that William was killed by a machine-gun bullet—as were many others in his platoon.

William Rogers was buried at Ronssoy Communal Cemetery, France.

He is listed on the Shire of Bacchus Marsh Roll of Honour, the Bacchus Marsh & District Roll of Honour and the Holy Trinity Church Roll of Honour, Bacchus Marsh. He is also remembered in Maddingley Cemetery, Bacchus Marsh and the Coimadai Avenue of Honour.

Notes

  1. Pioneer battalions differed from normal infantry in that they would be composed of a mixture of men who were experienced with picks and shovels and some who had skilled trades . A Pioneer battalion would also carry a range of technical stores that infantry would not.
