David was born at Bacchus Marsh, VIC, in 1896, to David Coghlan and Isabella Teresa Hogg. David had a brother, Michael, who is also remembered in the avenue.

He was a farmer at Bacchus Marsh, VIC, when he enlisted in the AIF, 13th Reinforcements, 2nd Australian Field Artillery Brigade, on the 9th of August 1915, aged nearly 20. David embarked aboard the HMAT A19 Afric in early January 1916, disembarking in Egypt in February. He was first posted to the 1st Divisional Ammunition Column before transferring to the 6th Battery of the 2nd Field Artillery Brigade.

From March 1916 David was in France where he was promoted to Bombardier in August. In October 1917 he was wounded - gunshot wound to the right thigh - and admitted to hospital in England. He rejoined his unit in France in July 1918 but two months later was again wounded - gunshot wound to the left arm and leg - and admitted to hospital in England.

David embarked for Australia aboard the Ceramic at the end of January 1919, arriving back in Australia at the end of March. He was discharged from the AIF in May.

David Coghlan died in 1983, age 86.

He is listed on the Shire of Bacchus Marsh Roll of Honour and the Roll of Honour for the Coimadai State School. He is also remembered in the Coimadai Avenue of Honour.
