Alfred Barrett was born at Pyalong, VIC, in 1890, to Alfred James Barrett and Annie Maher. He was married to Ivy Edith Blay in 1913 and they had two children, Alfred James and William Sidney. James had three brothers⁽³⁾, Charles 6573, Edward 5029 and William 1151, in the fighting line.

He was a Police Constable, at Bacchus Marsh, VIC, when he applied for extended leave to enlist in the AIF, which he did on the 31^st of May 1916. He embarked aboard the HMAT Orsova in early December, as an acting Sergeant with the 13^th Light Horse Regiment, 15^th Reinforcements disembarking at Plymouth, in the middle of February 1917 and reverting to a Trooper.

At the end of April 1917, he left for France to join the 13^th LHR, which had become part of the 1^stAnzac Mounted Troops. By the middle of November he had transferred to the 13^th Field Artillery Brigade as a Gunner and by December he had the rank of Driver. In late February 1918 he was on leave in England, returning to France at the end of May. February of 1919 again saw him on leave in England but shortly after he was in hospital with bronchitis and was discharged from hospital in early March.

He returned to Australia aboard the SS Armagh on the 5^th of April 1919 and was discharged on the 5^th of June 1919.

He is listed on the Shire of Bacchus Marsh Roll of Honour, the Bacchus Marsh & District Roll of Honour and the Roll of Honour for the Bacchus Marsh ANA.

He joined as Private, became a Trooper and when he transferred to the 13^th FAB he was a Gunner then finally a Driver.
He started out in the 13^th Light Horse, which, in France, became part of the 1^st Anzac Mounted Troops, then transferred to the 13^th FAB
