James was born in South Yarra, VIC, on the 10th of May 1881(2), to Thomas James Connor and Emily Gibbons. He married Eliza Jane Grant in 1911 who died in Bacchus Marsh in 1934. He married Miriam Louise Smith in 1936. James had two brother's-in-law, Harry and Robert Grant, who are also remembered in the Avenue.

James was living in Bacchus Marsh, VIC and working as an ironmonger when he enlisted in the AIF, 14th Reinforcements, 21st Battalion, on the 8th of March 1916, aged nearly 36. He embarked aboard the HMAT A32 Themistocles in July, disembarking at Plymouth, England, in September.
In December 1916 James joined the 21st Battalion in France. Later that month he spent nearly two months in hospital, rejoining his unit in early February 1917. James was promoted to Lance Corporal in March just before he was wounded in action. He was admitted to hospital in Rouen, France before being transferred to hospital in England in April - gunshot wound to the left eye. In June he was attached for duty with the 1st Australian Auxiliary Hospital(2), Harefield until being detached from that duty in November, pending return to Australia. James embarked for Australia aboard the HMAT A34 Persic in December, arriving back in Australia in February 1918. He was discharged from the AIF in March 1918.
James Connor enlisted at Bacchus Marsh in the Australian Army in 1942 - V361375. He was discharged in 1945 with the rank of Warrant Officer Class 2 in the 20th Battalion Volunteer Defence Corps.
James died at his home in Bacchus Marsh, VIC, in 1958, aged 78 and is buried in Maddingley Cemetery.
He is listed on the Shire of Bacchus Marsh Roll of Honour, the Bacchus Marsh & District Roll of Honour, the Roll of Honour for the Bacchus Marsh ANA and the St. Andrew's Presbyterian Church Roll of Honour.
