David was born at Glengarry, VIC, in 1889 to Alfred William Crowe and Annie Martin.
David was a railway porter at Parwan, VIC(3) when he enlisted in the AIF on the 19th of July 1915, aged 25. He had previously served in the Junior Cadets - at Moe State School - and the Narracan Rifle Club. David embarked aboard the HMAT A64 Demosthenes with the 13th Reinforcements, 8th Battalion, in late December, disembarking in Egypt early in 1916.
In March 1916 he was promoted to Corporal then transferred to the 1st Australian Pioneer Battalion and embarked for France, disembarking at Marseilles in April. A month later he was in hospital for three weeks with mumps. From August to November he held the rank of temporary Sergeant. He was again appointed a temporary Sergeant in January 1917 before finally being promoted to Sergeant in March 1917.
In June 1917 he was on leave in the UK when he was admitted to the 2nd Scottish General Hospital, Edinburgh with enteritis. David was discharged from hospital in late August and resumed his leave before embarking for Australia aboard the HMAT A30 Borda at the end of September. He was discharged from the AIF in May 1918.
David Crowe died in Brighton, VIC, on the 15th of November 1954, aged 65.
He is listed on the Bacchus Marsh & District Roll of Honour.
