Percival Gregory Barry was born at Preston, VIC, to John Joseph Barry and Susannah Tulk on the 17th of November 1897. He had three brothers, Henry, Richard and Patrick, who are also remembered in the Avenue. There was another brother, Clement who enlisted but for medical reasons was discharged.

He was a farm labourer when he enlisted in the AIF at Prahran, VIC, on the 26th of February 1916, at the age of 20 - his parents lived in Bacchus Marsh. Assigned to the 6th Battalion, 17th Reinforcements, he embarked aboard the HMAT Euripides in April 1916. He arrived at Etaples, France, by way of Egypt, on the 7th of June 1916. Shortly afterwards he spent two weeks in hospital with german measles, returning to duty with the 6th Battalion in early July.

Towards the end of August he was detached to the 1st Canadian Tunnelling Company, then at the beginning of March 1917 he transferred from the 6th Battalion to the Australian Electrical and Mechanical Mining and Boring Company.

On the 6th of September he was admitted to hospital after being Wounded in Action - gassed. It was not until the middle of November that he was able to rejoin his unit in France. At the end of February 1918 he was granted two weeks leave. In July he had a brief visit to hospital with Impetigo. November again saw him in hospital for two weeks with Influenza, shortly afterwards taking a week's leave in Paris. Early in 1919 he had another two weeks leave before returning to England at the end of April 1919 and embarking for Australia in June aboard the Ormonde.

He returned to Australia at the beginning of August and was discharged on the 15th of September 1919. Later that year he married Lilian Peterson - she planted the tree dedicated to Percival.

Percival Gregory Barry died at Macleod, VIC, in 1972, at the age of 74.

He is listed on the Shire of Bacchus Marsh Roll of Honour and the Bacchus Marsh & District Roll of Honour.
