George Forsyth Bence was born at Bacchus Marsh, VIC, in 1884, to George Alfred Bence and Janet Anderson.
George was a farmer and tried to enlist in July 1915 but was rejected, medically unfit - teeth. On the 2nd of March 1916 he enlisted at Bendigo, VIC, in the AIF, 38th Battalion, aged 21¾. George embarked for England aboard the HMAT A54 Runic at the end of June, disembarking at Plymouth in August.
At the end of November 1916 he embarked for France. On the 27th of February 1917 he received a severe gun shot wound to the head and was admitted to the Colchester General Hospital, England, dangerously ill. In April he was pronounced out of danger.
In July he embarked aboard the Euripides, disembarking in Australia in September. On the 19th of November 1917 he was discharged from the AIF, medically unfit - disability due to war service. George Bence married Lydia Nancarrow in 1920.
George Forsyth Bence died at Kerang, VIC, in 1975, aged 80.
He is listed on the Bacchus Marsh & District Roll of Honour and the Kerang Roll of Honour.
