Ross was born in Mungundi, NSW in 1895 to James Livingston Edols(1) - died 1901 - and Charlotte Worthington Lees. In 1921 he married Alice Violet Shortt in Sydney, NSW. They had two children. Ross had an uncle, Richard Edols, who had property at Staughton Vale or Balliang, VIC.
Ross was a grazier when he enlisted at Bendigo, VIC in the AIF, 6th Reinforcements, 13th Light Horse Regiment on the 2nd of August 1915, aged just under 20. Prior to enlisting he had served six years in the Senior Cadets. Ross embarked aboard the SS Hawkes Bay in late October.
After disembarking in Egypt, Ross was admitted to hospital in mid February 1916 suffering from mumps. He transferred to the 2nd Divisional Ammunition Column in March and not long after embarked for Marseilles, France. In October that year he developed appendicitis and spent three weeks in hospital in Boulogne, France. He was granted three weeks leave in 1917 and again in 1918 before he was hospitalised with influenza in June 1918 for six weeks.
Ross returned to England in late January 1919 and embarked for home aboard the Tras os Montes in April, returning to Australia in late May and was discharged from the AIF in August.
After the war Ross was in Rutherglen, VIC then moved to NSW in the 1930s. He died at Pennant Hills, NSW in 1978, aged 82.
He is listed on the Shire of Bacchus Marsh Roll of Honour, the Bacchus Marsh & District Roll of Honour, the Anakie & Staughtonvale Roll of Honour and the Roll of Honour in the Kerang New Times 17 Nov 1916.
