Ross was born at Bacchus Marsh, VIC on the 12th of April 1881 to William Grant and Janet Langlands Kerr. Ross married Esther Charlotte Shaw in QLD in 1914 - they had one child before Esther died in 1915.

Ross was a Commonwealth Veterinary Inspector in QLD when he was granted a commission as a Captain in the AIF, 5th Australian Mobile Veterinary Section on the 18th of October 1915, aged 34. He embarked from Sydney aboard the HMAT A67 Orsova in November with the 2nd Remount Unit, disembarking in Egypt. Ross was admitted to hospital in February 1916 suffering from enteric fever. After being discharged from hospital he spent some time in a convalescent depot awaiting hospital transport back to England, finally embarking from Alexandria, Egypt in August.

In England he spent some further time in hospital before proceeding to France in late October 1916 and was attached to 5th Division Headquarters as a Veterinary Officer. In August 1917 Ross was granted leave in England and in October ceased being attached and rejoined the 5th Australian Mobile Veterinary Section. In January 1918 he had two weeks leave and also again in September. While returning from leave he was admitted to hospital in Boulogne, France, with influenza - discharged in November to 21 days leave in England.

In January 1919 Ross was again briefly in hospital and then granted further leave before embarking for Australia aboard the Lancashire in late March - still suffering from the effects of influenza. His appointment was terminated in July 1919.

Ross died at Heidelberg, VIC in 1957, aged 76.

He is listed on the Bacchus Marsh & District Roll of Honour and the Bacchus Marsh ANA Honour Roll.

Notes

  1. This could possibly be his mother using her maiden name, although why she would then use her husband's initial I do not know.
I have been informed by Ian Thomas, a relative, that Ross' mother Janet Kerr died in 1909 so it could not be her. It is more likely to be Mrs Georgina Kerr wife of William Kerr who lived at St Monans, Parwan.
