Private John William Hammond

John was born at Penshurst, VIC in 1872 to William Hammond and Johanna Pole. He married Annie Friers in 1901 and they had at least five children.

He was a miner⁽¹⁾ when he enlisted in the AIF on the 18^th of August 1915, aged 43. In March 1916 he was court martialled and declared a deserter - awarded 90 days detention and struck off the strength of the 15^th Reinforcements, 14^th Battalion. In June 1916 he appears to have been with the 18^th Reinforcements, 7^th Battalion and finally in September was with the 21^st Reinforcements, 6^th Battalion when he embarked aboard the HMAT A71 Nestor in October.

John disembarked at Plymouth, England in mid November 1916 and was on his way to France in December where he spent a few days in hospital, suffering from scabies, before joining his unit February 1917. In August he spent three month in a Convalescent Depot - probably with rheumatism - before rejoining his unit in December. Not long afterwards he was again hospitalised and diagnosed with myalgia. In January 1918 he returned to England and then embarked for Australia aboard the A8 Osterly, returning to Australia in late April and was admitted to the 11^th Australian General Hospital - rheumatism pre-existing gradually got worse in France - a week later he was described as in good health, practically nothing since return. In late May 1918 he was discharged from the AIF.

He is listed on the Shire of Bacchus Marsh Roll of Honour and the Bacchus Marsh & District Roll of Honour.
