William was born at Avoca, VIC in 1891 to Meredith Robert Kerr and Jane Kofoed.

William was a motor driver (possibly a railway engine driver) and gave his address as Rowsley, VIC (near Bacchus Marsh) when he enlisted in the AIF on the 1st of July 1916, aged 21. He embarked aboard the HMAT A20 Hororata with the 18th Reinforcements, 23rd Battalion in November, disembarking at Plymouth, England at the end of January 1917.

In April 1917 he was transferred to the 67th Battalion and was later remustered as a Driver. In September he transferred back to the 23rd Battalion and joined his unit in Belgium in October. William spent two months in hospital with cellulitis in March 1918

Shortly before the Battle of Mont St. Quentin William suffered a shell wound to the head and arm. On the 30th of August 1918 William died of his wounds.

This man was admitted on August 28th suffering from severe head and arm wounds. His condition was very grave from the time of his admission and in spite of what could be done for him, he died two days later namely August 30th. He was buried in the Local cemetery and his grave will be cared for and kept tidy.
