Robert was born at Horsham, VIC on the 4th of May 1894 to Robert Lindsay - born in Bacchus Marsh - and Sarah Brown - born at Parwan. Robert had a brother, David, and the brother of his uncle, James Fagg(5), who are also remembered in the Avenue.

Robert was a bank clerk(3) at the London Bank in Horsham, VIC when he enlisted in the AIF, 10th Reinforcements, 3rd Divisional Ammunition Column on the 17th of March 1916, aged 21. In April he was promoted to Lance Corporal and then to Acting Corporal in September and embarked aboard the HMAT A11 Ascanius in May 1917 as a Driver.

After disembarking at Plymouth, England in July 1917 Robert spent a week in hospital with influenza and then two weeks with tonsillitis before proceeding to France and joining the 12th Field Artillery Brigade, 45th Battery in October. Robert transferred to Headquarters, 12th Field Artillery Brigade in May 1918 and was promoted first to Lance Bombardier, then Bombardier in July. He was granted two weeks leave in England in November and in January 1919 was detached to the Corps Central School(4), France. He returned to England in May and embarked aboard the Main in late July, returning to Australia in October and was discharged from the AIF in November.

He is listed on the Bacchus Marsh & District Roll of Honour and the Roll of Honour for pupils of Parwan State School.
