Gunner Charles Alexander Low

Charles was born in Dundee, Scotland about 1897 to Charles Low and Elizabeth Hessin⁽²⁾⁽³⁾. Charles had two brothers, John Campbell and John Aitken, who are also remembered in the Avenue.

Charles was a market gardener in Bacchus Marsh, VIC when he enlisted in the AIF, 13^th Reinforcements, 8^th Light Horse Regiment on the 21^st of September 1915, aged just 18 - his parents gave their permission to enlist. His father stated :-

... I am an exsoldier of the 42^d Black Watch and quite approve …

He embarked aboard the HMAT A44 Vestalia in January 1916, disembarking in Egypt and joining his unit in February. In April he transferred to the 12^th Field Artillery Brigade - mustered as a Gunner. Robert transferred to the 4^th Divisional Ammunition Column, No. 2 Section just before embarking from Egypt in June.

After disembarking at Marseilles, France in June 1916 Charles was re-mustered as a Driver. He spent a month in hospital with influenza in December and was again in hospital, for five weeks, in March 1917 - reason unknown. In September 1918 Charles was granted three weeks leave in England - he overstayed his leave and forfeited two days pay for his trouble. In October he reverted to a Gunner and in March 1919 he returned to England and embarked aboard the China in May, returning to Australia in June and was discharged from the AIF in July.

Charles died at Heidelberg, VIC in 1969, aged 72.

He is listed on the Bacchus Marsh & District Roll of Honour.
