Thomas was born at Bacchus Marsh, VIC in 1896 to Thomas Manly and Mary Johnston.
Thomas enlisted at Bacchus Marsh, in the AIF, 7th Reinforcements, 13th Light Horse Regiment on the 15th of July 1915, aged just 18 - his parents consent having been given. He embarked aboard the HMAT A40 Ceramic in November, disembarking in Egypt and joining his unit in February 1916 - posted to B
Squadron. In March B
Squadron was attached to the 4th Division as Cavalry and embarked from Egypt in June.
After arriving in France the 13th Light Horse Regiment became part of the 1st ANZAC Mounted Troops. Thomas was granted two weeks leave in England in September 1917 and again in October 1918 before finally returning to England in April 1919. Thomas embarked for home aboard the Nestor in May, returning to Australia in July and was discharged from the AIF in August.
Thomas died in Bacchus Marsh, VIC in 1931, aged 35. He is buried at Maddingley Cemetery, Bacchus Marsh.
He is listed on the Shire of Bacchus Marsh Roll of Honour and the Bacchus Marsh & District Roll of Honour.
