Samuel was born at Munderbury, England on the 5^th of April 1891 to James and Elizabeth Minnett.

Samuel enlisted in the AIF, 4^th Light Horse Regiment in August 1914 but was rejected due to poor sight⁽¹⁾ - he had been a member of the Bacchus Marsh Light Horse Troop⁽²⁾. He was a bricklayer when he successfully enlisted in the AIF, 5^th Reinforcements, 29^th Battalion on the 4^th of January 1916, aged nearly 25. He embarked aboard the HMAT A68 Anchises in March, disembarking in Egypt some time later. He embarked from Alexandria, Egypt in June.

After arriving in France in June 1916 Samuel joined his unit in the field in August, but in December was admitted to hospital for a month - appendicitis. In October 1917 he suffered a shell wound to the right thigh and was admitted to the 1^st East General Hospital, Cambridge, England - condition serious. He was transferred to the 1^st London General Hospital in November and discharged to furlough in mid December. In April 1918 Samuel attended the 5^th Division Signal School, 14^th Training Battalion for a course of instruction - in August he was either still there or returned for another course. Samuel rejoined the 29^th Battalion in the field in September. Two weeks later, during the attacks on St Quentin Canal, he was again wounded in action - gunshot wound to the left shoulder, serious - and admitted to the 2^nd General Hospital, Harvre, France, then to the 1^st Southern General Hospital, Stourbridge, Birmingham, England. In January 1919 Samuel was transferred to the 3^rd Auxiliary Hospital and discharged to furlough in late January. He embarked for home aboard the HMT Czar in March and transshipped to the HS Dongla at Alexandria, Egypt in April, returning to Australia in May and was discharged from the AIF in January 1920.

Samuel enlisted in the Australian Army in 1941 and was a Private in the 17^th Garrison Battalion when he was discharged in 1944.

Samuel died at Heidelberg, VIC in 1963, aged 72.

He is listed on the Shire of Bacchus Marsh Roll of Honour, the Bacchus Marsh & District Roll of Honour and the Holy Trinity Church Roll of Honour.

On his attestation form he states that he had previously served in AIF 4^th Light Horse but was rejected due to sight.
