Alexander was born in Bacchus Marsh, VIC in 1887 to James Murdoch and Isabella Cairns. James died in 1888 and Isabella remarried some time later.

Alexander - Scottie(1) - was a butcher when he enlisted at Bacchus Marsh in the AIF, 7th Battalion on the 24th of August 1914, aged 27 - only three weeks after war was declared. He embarked aboard the HMAT A20 Hororata in October, disembarking in Egypt in early December.

Alexander took part in the Gallipoli landing on the 25th of April 1915 but was shot in the stomach while landing on the beach(1) and admitted to the HMHS Gascon. He returned to Egypt and was admitted to the 15th General Hospital, Alexandria where he died five days later and was buried in the Alexandria (Chatby) Military and War Memorial Cemetery, Egypt.

He is listed on the Shire of Bacchus Marsh Roll of Honour, the Bacchus Marsh & District Roll of Honour, the Roll of Honour for the Coimadai State School and the Roll of Honour of St. Andrew's Presbyterian Church. He is also remembered in the Coimadai Avenue of Honour.
