William was born in Carlton, VIC in 1883 to William Murcott and Mary Ann Liney.

William was an assistant surveyor and gave his address as East Brunswick when he enlisted in the AIF on the 24th of July 1915, aged 31. In November he was posted to the 13th Reinforcements, 1st Divisional Ammunition Column and embarked aboard the HMAT A19 Afric in January 1916, disembarking in Egypt in February. William transferred to the 14th Field Artillery Brigade in March before embarking from Alexandria, Egypt in June.

Arriving in France at the very end of June 1916 he was transferred to the 25th Field Artillery Brigade a week later. In January 1917 William transferred to the 13th Field Artillery Brigade, 51st Battery. He was charged with delayed obeying of an order in February and forfeited seven days pay. William was granted two weeks furlough in September and upon return spent a month in hospital. In March 1918 he attended a school of instruction for a week. William was charged with gambling in July and forfeited four days pay. He was granted three weeks leave in England in November before returning to England in April 1919. He embarked from England aboard the Orontes the following month, returning to Australia in late June and was discharged from the AIF in September - medically unfit, deafness.

William Murcott died in Carlton, VIC in 1963, aged 79.

He is listed on the Shire of Bacchus Marsh Roll of Honour and the Bacchus Marsh & District Roll of Honour.
