William was born in Bacchus Marsh, VIC in 1872 to Paul Johnston(2) and Susan Hamilton. William married May Mabbett in 1903 and they had seven children - one deceased.

William was a labourer and gave his address as Officer, VIC when he enlisted in the AIF, 12th Reinforcements, 21st Battalion on the 1st of February 1916, aged 43. He embarked aboard the HMAT A14 Euripides in April, arriving in England some time later.

In September 1916 William joined his unit in Belgium but in November was killed in action.

He is listed on the Shire of Bacchus Marsh Roll of Honour, the Bacchus Marsh & District Roll of Honour and the Roll of Honour for St. Andrew's Presbyterian Church, Bacchus Marsh. He is also remembered at the Villers-Bretonneux Memorial, France.
