Herbert was born at Bacchus Marsh, VIC in 1876 to William Henry McFarlane⁽¹⁾ and Margaret Wilson.

Herbert was a motor mechanic and proprietor of a motor garage⁽³⁾ at Geelong, VIC when he enlisted there in the AIF, 7^th Reinforcements, 8^th Australian Army Services Corps (AASC), 17^th Divisional Ammunition Park, 301 Company (Mechancial Transport) on the 9^th of July 1915, aged 38. He embarked from Sydney aboard the HMAT A21 Marere in August, disembarking some time later in Egypt.

After joining his unit he was promoted to Corporal in October 1915. In April 1916 he was detached for duty with the Australian Comforts Fund⁽²⁾ before being promoted to Lance Sergeant in May and embarking for France. Herbert was attached for duty with the 2^nd Division in August and then to the 2^nd Divisional Train as a Driver a month later and in October to the 21^st Company, Australian Army Services Corps. Herbert proceeded to England for attachment with the Australian Comforts Fund in February 1917 and then in July was attached to Administration, Headquarters, London. In November he spent a couple of days in hospital, suffering from rheumatism, a complaint he had for the last eight years - although had been fairly free of it - but was lately getting worse. In February 1918 he was admitted to No. 2 Convalescent Depot, Weymouth before embarking from England aboard the HT Marathon in April, returning to Australia in June and was discharged from the AIF in July.

Herbert McFarlane died in Geelong, VIC in 1939, aged 62.

He is listed on the Shire of Bacchus Marsh Roll of Honour, the Bacchus Marsh & District Roll of Honour and the Roll of Honour of S^t. Andrew's Presbyterian Church, Bacchus Marsh.

Notes

William McFarlane JP was an early resident of Bacchus Marsh, settling there in 1854. He was a farmer, businessman, councillor and JP among other things.
The Australian Comforts Fund (ACF) was first formed on 24 August 1916 from a number of State based organisations that had been individually formed at the beginning of the First World War to send comforts to the troops.
