John was a storekeeper when he enlisted at Bacchus Marsh, in the AIF, on the 14th of March 1916, aged almost 30. He embarked aboard the HMAT A32 Themistocles with the 19th Reinforcements, 5th Battalion in July, disembarking at Plymouth, England in September.

Shortly after disembarking John transferred to the 38th Battalion before proceeding to France in November 1916. In June 1917 John was wounded in action - gunshot wound to the head - and invalided back to England where he was admitted to the Royal Victoria Hospital, Netley. After four weeks he was transferred to the 3rd Auxiliary Hospital, Dartford and discharged to two weeks furlough in September.

There is no further record of him until he embarked for Australia aboard the Orsova in January 1919, returning to Australia in late February and was discharged from the AIF in April.

John was living in Elsternwick, VIC in 1941 and in 1955 he died at Heidelberg, VIC, aged 68.
