Francis was born in Lancashire, England on the 26th of July 1888 to Rev. Francis James Nance and Margaret Lyth. The family arrived in Australia in December 1889. In 1915 Francis was married to Winifred Fisher, by his father, Rev. Nance.

Francis was a doctor(1), practicing at Bacchus Marsh, VIC when he joined the AIF on the 16th of August 1915, aged 27. He was appointed a Captain on the 1st of March 1916 and embarked aboard the HMAT A67 Orsova two weeks later, disembarking in Egypt some time later.

He was attached to the 8th Australian Field Ambulance in April 1916 and two months later was in France. At the end of July he was seconded to the 31st Battalion for two weeks and in December to the 29th Battalion. Later that month he was admitted to a Casualty Clearing Station and then to the 2nd General Hospital, France - bronchitis. Francis was then invalided back to England and admitted to the 1st Southern General Hospital, Stourbridge, Birmingham - bronchitis severe. In February 1917 he embarked for Australia aboard the Benalla for three month change - pulmonary tuberculosis. On the 21st of July A PUBLIC WELCOME will be tendered at the Mechanics' Institute, Bacchus Marsh which he would have attended. His appointment was terminated in late October.

After the war he lived in Colac, VIC for quite some time until he moved to Doncaster, VIC about 1960, where he died in 1966, aged 77.

He is listed on the Shire of Bacchus Marsh Roll of Honour and the Bacchus Marsh & District Roll of Honour.
