William was born at Blakeville, VIC in 1893 to William Henry Nolan and Sarah Greene. William had a brother, John, who is also remembered in the Avenue.

William was a labourer and gave his address as Blakeville, VIC when he enlisted in the AIF, 7th Reinforcements, 37th Battalion on the 23rd of October 1916, aged nearly 23. He embarked aboard the HMAT A70 Ballarat in February 1917, disembarking at Devonport, England, on the 25th of April - the Ballarat was torpedoed(1) by a submarine in the English Channel on the 25th of April 1917 and sank the next day.

In September 1917 William joined his unit in France and in October was wounded in action during the Battle of Broodseinde Ridge and invalided back to England and admitted to the 3rd London General Hospital, Wandsworth - gunshot wound to face and both eyes. He was transferred to the 1st Auxiliary Hospital, Harefield in December before embarking for home aboard the Eurpedes in January 1918, returning to Australia in March and was discharged from the AIF in April.
