His service records state he was working as an engine driver(1) when he enlisted in the AIF, on the 10th of July 1915, at the age of nearly 24. In October he embarked aboard the RMS Moldavia with the 21st Battalion, 6th Reinforcements.

In January 1916, in Egypt, he probably joined the 21st Battalion after their evacuation from Gallipoli. In May, Hugh was in France and would have been involved in the battles of Pozieres and Mouquet Farm. Hugh was killed in action on the 21st of November 1916.

His original grave was found about a mile south of Ligny-Thilloy and he was reinterred at Cabaret Rouge Cemetery, France.

He is listed on the Shire of Bacchus Marsh Roll of Honour and the Bacchus Marsh & District Roll of Honour.
