Roy was born at Bacchus Marsh, VIC in 1895 to William Edward Ramsey and Ellen Dickie.
Roy was a clerk with the State Savings Bank when he first applied to enlist in the AIF in May 1916. He successfully enlisted in the AIF, 32nd Reinforcements, Australian Field Artillery on the 24th of April 1917, aged 21½. He embarked aboard the SS Indarra in late November, disembarking at Suez, Egypt in late December and embarking from Alexandria a month later. After trans-shipping at Taranto, Italy and Cherebourg, France Roy finally disembarked at Southampton, England in mid February 1918.
It was not until October 1918 that he proceeded to France to join the 3rd Australian Field Artillery Brigade. In January 1919 he returned to England where he was detached for duty with the Australian Army Pay Corps. Roy was promoted the temporary Second Corporal(3) in June but reverted to Gunner - although granted the rank of Honorary Second Corporal - before being granted two weeks leave in September. Roy embarked for home aboard the Pakeha in October, returning to Australia in November and was discharged from the AIF on Christmas Day 1919.
Roy died at Box Hill, VIC in 1971, aged 76.
He is listed on the Shire of Bacchus Marsh Roll of Honour and the Bacchus Marsh & District Roll of Honour.
