William Henry Bourke was born at Bacchus Marsh, VIC, in 1892, to William Bourke and Mary Ellen King.

He was a labourer when he enlisted in the AIF at Brunswick, VIC, on the 31st of January 1916, at the age of almost 24. William embarked from Melbourne aboard the HMAT A23 Suffolk in April with the 16th Reinforcements, 6th Battalion. After a stopover in Egypt he disembarked at Plymouth, England, in June 1916.

In September 1916 William Joined the 6th Battalion in France. On the 26th of October 1917 he was wounded in action, near Ypres, Belguim. Shortly afterwards he was admitted to the Lord Derby War Hospital, Warrington, England with a gunshot wound to the right thigh - severe. In February 1918 William was discharged to a Convalescent Depot before embarking for Australia aboard the Somali in December.

William arrived back in Australia in February 1919 and was discharged from the AIF in April. William died at Ascot Vale, VIC, in 1959, aged 67.

He is listed on the Shire of Bacchus Marsh Roll of Honour and the Bacchus Marsh & District Roll of Honour.
