Gordon was born in 1893 to Abraham Smith(3) and Isabel McDonald. Gordon had two cousins(2), Thomas and Melville, who is also remembered in the Avenue.
Gordon was a labourer and gave his address as Buxton, VIC when he enlisted in the AIF on the 6th of July 1915, aged 22½. He was allocated to the 29th Battalion, D
Company in September and embarked aboard the HMAT A11 Ascanius in November, disembarking at Suez, Egypt in December.
He embarked from Alexandria, Egypt in June 1916 and disembarked at Marseilles, France a week later. During the Battle of Fromelles, on the 19th of July, Gordon was killed in action. His identification disc was forwarded by the German Authorities in 1917.
His remains are now buried at Pheasant Wood Military Cemetery, France(4).
He is listed on the Bacchus Marsh & District Roll of Honour.
