Charles was born in Bacchus Marsh, VIC in 1876 to James Somerton and Sarah Martin.

Charles was a driver when he enlisted at Blackboy Hill, WA in the AIF on the 5th of October 1916, aged 40. He was first allocated to the 16th Battalion and then the 8th Reinforcements, 51st Battalion before he embarked from Fremantle, WA aboard the HMAT A35 Berrima in late December and disembarked at Devonport, England in February 1917.

He spent some time in both the 15th and 13th Training Battalions before proceeding overseas to France in June 1917 and joining the 51st Battalion in July. Charles was admitted to hospital in November and returned to England in January 1918 to embark for Australia aboard the Ostereley - for change, rheumatism. He was discharged from the AIF in April, medically unfit.

Charles died in WA in September 1953, aged 77.

He is listed on the Bacchus Marsh & District Roll of Honour.
