Alexander was born at Linton, VIC on the 28^th of May 1895 to Alexander MacKenzie Tyers and Mary Jane Johnston.

Alexander was a civil engineer, a surveyor and Bacchus Marsh Shire Secretary⁽²⁾ - he was also a Second Lieutenant⁽³⁾ with the 65^th Battalion - and gave his address as Moonee Ponds, VIC when he enlisted on the in the AIF, 4^th Squadron, Australian Flying Corps, aged 21½. He embarked on the 17^th of January 1917 aboard the RMS Omrah and disembarked at Plymouth, England in late March.

The 4^th Squadron, Australian Flying Corps (AFC) was designated the 71^st Australian Squadron, Royal Flying Corps (RFC) when they arrived in England in late March 1917 and sent for training to Castle Bromwich, near Birmingham. In April he was sent to the 41^st Reserve Squadron for instruction and then to the 45^th Training Squadron. Alexander was sent to administration headquarters, London in November and then to the AFC Depot before he embarked for home in January 1918 aboard the Osterly - mild epilepsy - and his appointment terminated in May.

In September 1918 Alexander transferred from the 65^th Battalion to the M.U.R. with seniority as from date of transfer. He transferred to the 59^th Battalion in 1920 and then to the R. of O. - Australian Army Reserve (Reserve of Officers) - in 1922. He was again with the 59^th Battalion in 1926 and back to the R. of O. in 1929. He was appointed Captain in 1940. Alexander enlisted in the Australian Army in October 1942 - VX112165 - and was discharged in November 1945 with the rank of Major.

Alexander died at Prahran, VIC in 1967, aged 72.

He is listed on the Shire of Bacchus Marsh Roll of Honour, the Bacchus Marsh & District Roll of Honour, the Roll of Honour of S^t. Andrew's Presbyterian Church, Bacchus Marsh, the Linton St Paul's Church Roll of Honour and the Linton Old Lintonians Association Roll of Honor.
