Alfred was born at Burra, SA in 1885 to Mark Usher(2) and Sarah Ann Manamly(3). He married Mary Jane Hambley in 1916 just before embarkation. Alfred had two brothers, James and Mark, who are also remembered in the Avenue.

Alfred was a chauffer when he enlisted in the AIF, 39th Battalion on the 8th of February, 1916, aged nearly 31. In April he was posted as a driver with the 3rd Divisional Supply Column before he embarked aboard the HMAT A19 Afric in June and disembarked at Southampton, England in late July.

In November 1916 Alfred proceeded overseas to France and we know little more until he was granted leave in England in January 1918. The 3rd Australian Divisional Supply Column became part of the newly formed 3rd Australian Divisional Mechanical Transport Company in March. He was granted leave in Paris in November and again in England in January 1919 before he returned to England in May and embarked for home in July aboard the Port Melbourne, disembarking in Australia in August and was discharged from the AIF in December.

Alfred died at Frankston, VIC in 1960, aged 75.

He is listed on the Shire of Bacchus Marsh Roll of Honour and the Bacchus Marsh & District Roll of Honour.
