Mark was born at Bacchus Marsh, VIC in 1891 to Mark Usher(2) and Sarah Ann Manamly(3). Mark had two brothers, James and Alfred, who are also remembered in the Avenue.
Mark was a boundary rider and gave his address as Bacchus Marsh, VIC when he enlisted in the AIF on the 17th of July 1915, aged 24. In March 1916 he was allotted to the 3rd Light Horse Brigade Train (12 Company Army Service Corps) before he embarked aboard the RMS Orontes and disembarked some time later in Egypt.
The next we hear about Mark, he is with the 6th Divisional Train in England in March 1917 and then the 30th Company, Army Service Corps. In October he is transferred back to the 12th Company, Army Service Corps before proceeding overseas to France in February 1918 and joining the 3rd Divisional Train. Mark was wounded in action in late July - bullet wound to face and skull - and invalided back to England and admitted to the 1st Southern General Hospital, Stourbridge - injuries severe. He was transferred to The Queens Hospital at the end of August and then to the 1st Auxiliary Hospital, Harefield for a week in October before he embarked for home - compound fracture to mandible and skull. After Mark returned to Australia he was discharged from the AIF in February 1919.
Mark died at Bacchus Marsh, VIC in July 1949, aged 58.
He is listed on the Shire of Bacchus Marsh Roll of Honour and the Bacchus Marsh & District Roll of Honour. He is also remembered in the Coimadai Avenue of Honour.
