Arthur was born at Newcastle, England in 1888 to Christopher Waud and Polly Jane Ambley. Arthur was married to Emma Mary [unknown].
Arthur was a bricklayer and gave his address as Bacchus Marsh, VIC when he enlisted in the AIF, 6th Reinforcements, 21st Battalion on the 16th of July 1915, aged 25¾. He embarked aboard the RMS Moldavia in October and disembarked in Egypt some time later.
In February 1916 Arthur was transferred to the 7th Battalion and embarked for France some time later. He was promoted to Lance Corporal in August shortly before being admitted to hospital for three weeks, suffering from scabies. In late February 1917 Arthur was wounded in action and invalided back to England and admitted to Horton County of London War Hospital, Epsom - gunshot wound to the left arm, severe. He was discharged to furlough in mid April but overstayed his leave and was AWL for seven days, for which he forfeited 15 days pay. Shortly afterwards he reverted to Private at his own request. Arthur was again AWL in August, this time for five days and forfeited 15 days pay. In late November he was again AWL - one day - and forfeited 10 days pay before he embarked for home in late December, aboard the Runic - fractured elbow. Arthur returned to Australia in early February 1918 and was discharged from the AIF in May.
Arthur died at Heidelberg, VIC in 1966, aged 76.
He is listed on the Shire of Bacchus Marsh Roll of Honour.
