Albert was born in Diamond Creek, VIC in May 1894 to William Francis Woodward and Jessie Alice Clapperton.
Albert was an orchardist and gave his address as Bacchus Marsh, VIC when he enlisted in the AIF on the 11th of December 1917, aged 23½. he embarked aboard the HMAT A74 Marathon with the 7th Victorian Reinforcements in July 1918.
When he disembarked in London, England in late September 1918 he was allotted to the 7th Battalion but a week later was transferred to Artillery Details and marched out to the Reserve Brigade Australian Artillery and proceeded to France. Albert transferred to the 11th Field Artillery Brigade in December. He returned to England in May 1919 and in August was granted six months leave in America for the purpose of instruction in agriculture and pig-raising methods
. He embarked aboard the SS Celtic later that month. In September 1920 he embarked from America aboard the SS Niagra, disembarking in Australia in October and was discharged from the AIF in November.
He is listed on the Shire of Bacchus Marsh Roll of Honour, the Bacchus Marsh & District Roll of Honour and the Holy Trinity Church Roll of Honour.
