Fred Brighton was born in Caistor, Linconshire, England, on the 1st of December 1887, to Robert Brighton and Rebecca Palma Palmer. In 1909 Fred married Rebecca Palmer - probably in England.

Fred was living in Bacchus Marsh, VIC, and working as a groom or a station hand when he enlisted in the AIF, 1st Australian Remounts(1), 2nd Squadron on the 10th of September 1915. Fred embarked from Melbourne aboard the HMAT A67 Orsova in November, stopping only at Freemantle, WA, before arriving in Suez in December.

He spent most of his time with the Remount Unit in Egypt. However he did have a short trip to Salonika, Greece with a detail overseeing 600 mules. Fred returned to England in May 1919 and was discharged from the AIF in London in October. He had some family business to attend to before embarking for Australia in April 1920.

Fred Brighton died in Melbourne on the 14th of April 1937 aged 49, probably from cancer.

He is listed on the Shire of Bacchus Marsh Roll of Honour, the Bacchus Marsh & District Roll of Honour and the Holy Trinity Church Roll of Honour, Bacchus Marsh.

Notes

  1. Initially formed for the purpose of taking charge of the horses of the Light Horse Regiments that were acting as infantry at Gallipoli. Men were selected for their knowledge of horses. As Gallipoli was to be evacuated their original purpose was not required so they became part of the Remount Service in Egypt.
