James was born at Bacchus Marsh, VIC, in 1891, to Timothy Buckley and Catherine Rourke. He had a brother, William, who is also remembered in the Avenue. James married Alice Crowley in 1914.
He was employed as a sleeper cutter when he enlisted in the AIF, 3rd Australian Pioneer Battalion, A
Company, in Warragul, VIC on the 21st of February 1916, aged 24. He was granted Easter and final leave for a week in April and received his final medical examination at the end of May.
James did not go overseas. His service records indicate that he was discharged prior to leaving Australia. There is also mention of him being AWL at embarkation on the 6th of June 1916.
He is listed on the Shire of Bacchus Marsh Roll of Honour, the Bacchus Marsh & District Roll of Honour and the Roll of Honour for the Coimadai State School. He is also remembered in the Coimadai Avenue of Honour.
