Albert Buckley was born at Colac, VIC, cir 1889, to Henry Buckley and probably, Margaret Rooke.

He was a labourer, living in Cootamundra, NSW on the 1st of March 1916, at the age of 27 - his parents lived in Bacchus Marsh. He embarked aboard the HMAT A37 Barambah at the end of June, disembarking at Plymouth, England, in August.

In December 1916 Albert joined the 56th Battalion in France. He had 10 days in hospital in March. In May the 56th participated in the 2nd Battle of Bullecourt. During 1917 and was charged with several offences during 1917, including insolence, AWL, hesitating to obey and obscene language. He was a Lewis Gunner(1), when on the 26th of September 1917, he was shot in the groin, during the Battle of Polygon Wood, near Ypres, Belgium. He set off in fine spirits for the Dressing Station but was found dead beside the road before he reached it. (see Red Cross for differing accounts)

Albert Buckley is buried in the Menin Road South Military Cemetery, Belgium.

He is listed on the Shire of Bacchus Marsh Roll of Honour and the Bacchus Marsh & District Roll of Honour. He is also remembered in the St. Bernard's Catholic Church Memorial Window.
