John Calderwood was born in Pokeno, Auckland, New Zealand, in 1888, to John Thomas Calderwood and Margueritte Gibson. Prior to the war, John was married to Ethel Linda Spice and lived in Bacchus Marsh, VIC, with two children, Ethel and John. His mother was also a resident of Bacchus Marsh.

John enlisted in the AIF, 21st Battalion, 2nd Reinforcements, on the 12th of April 1915, at the age of 27. He had previously served in the Wellington Guards prior to leaving NZ. He embarked aboard the HMAT A64 Demosthenes in July.

September 1915 saw him on the Gallipoli Peninsular and by the end of December was back in Egypt. In February 1916 he spent three weeks in hospital with mumps. After that he was attached to the Australian Base Post Office. In June he was in England and was attached to the Australian Postal Corps. In April 1917 he transferred to the 66th Battalion and then in August to the 24th Battalion. In December John was AWOL for a week and forfeited 12 days pay.

In October 1918 he transferred to the Machine Gun Company Details and went to the Machine Gun Training Depot at Parkhouse before proceeding to France to join the 2nd Machine Gun Battalion. He returned to England in January 1919 and embarked for Australia aboard the Tranos Montea in April.

He arrived back in Australia in May 1919 and was discharged in July. John Calderwood died in 1959, aged 71.

He is listed on the Shire of Bacchus Marsh Roll of Honour, the Bacchus Marsh & District Roll of Honour and the Bacchus Marsh Roll of Honor.
