Walter Carter was born at Richmond, VIC, on the 25th of December 1886, to William Carter and Mary Hannah Smith. Prior to the war, Walter married Bridget Sophie Bourke, in 1911 and had two children, John and Mildred.
Walter was living in Bacchus Marsh, VIC and working as a labourer when he enlisted in the AIF, 3rd Australian Pioneer Battalion, 2nd Reinforcements on the 31st of May 1916, aged 31. At the end of July he embarked aboard the HMAT A32 Themistocles.
Walter disembarked at Plymouth, England, in September 1916 and was immediately admitted to hospital for three weeks before proceeding overseas to France at the end of November to join the 3rd Pioneers. In June 1917 Walter was wounded in action, gassed and was evacuated to England for hospital treatment before rejoining his unit in December.
He returned to Australia in June 1919 and was discharged from the AIF in July. In 1939 he enlisted in the Australian Army, service number V81561, at the age of 53 and was discharged in 1944.
Walter died at Heidelberg Repatriation Hospital, VIC, on the 5th of September 1974, aged 91. He is buried at Maddingley Cemetery, Bacchus Marsh.
He is listed on the Shire of Bacchus Marsh Roll of Honour and the Bacchus Marsh & District Roll of Honour.
