John Cardell was born at Elaine, VIC, in 1888, to Robert Cardell and Annie Eliza Tucker.

He was a farmer and blacksmith and gave his address as Moe(2), VIC, when he enlisted in the AIF, 5th Field Company Australian Engineers on the 6th of August 1915, aged 28. John embarked aboard the HMAT A40 Ceramic at the end of November, arriving in Egypt early in 1916.

In March 1916 he transferred to the 15th Field Company Australian Engineers and was promoted to Acting Farrier Sergeant, in which rank he was confirmed in May, before embarking at Alexandria, Egypt, in June, arriving in Marseilles, France, shortly afterwards. In February 1917, while on leave in England, John was hospitalised for three weeks before rejoining his unit in France. He was granted leave several more times before returning to England in March 1919 and embarking for Australia aboard the Chemnitz in July.

John Cardell arrived back in Australia in September 1919 and was discharged from the AIF in late October. He died at Koo Wee Rup, VIC in 1978, aged 89.

He is listed on the Shire of Bacchus Marsh Roll of Honour and the Bacchus Marsh & District Roll of Honour.

Notes

  1. FAR. stands for Farrier Seargeant
  2. His father resided at Moe.
It is more likely that he resided in the Bacchus Marsh district.
He was secretary of the Bacchus Marsh Tennis Club and was presented with a smokers' outfit at a send-off before he embarked.
