Harold Chambers was born at Heathcote, VIC, in 1895, to George Chambers and Annie Maria Sims. Harold had two brothers, Francis and John, who are also remembered in the Avenue.
Harold was a draper in Kyneton, VIC, when he enlisted in the AIF, 7th Battalion, on the 22nd of August 1914, only two weeks after war was declared; he was aged 20 - his parents lived in Bacchus Marsh. Prior to enlisting he had spent three years in the Senior Cadets, 66th Infantry. Harold embarked aboard the HMAT A20 Hororata in October as a Lance Corporal.
After a brief stop in Albany, WA, he disembarked in Egypt, in December 1914 - he probably reverted to Private at this time. Harold later took part in the ANZAC landing on the 25th April 1915, as part of the second wave. On that day he received a gunshot wound to the head. On the 28th he died at the 1st Australian Casualty Clearing Station and was buried at Beach Cemetery (plot 1, row A, grave 9), Gallipoli, Turkey by the Reverend J Green.
He is listed on the Shire of Bacchus Marsh Roll of Honour and the Kyneton Honour Roll.
